Internet service hosting has become a popular business in recent years, with many local and national providers. LANMARK’s approach to Internet services hosting differs somewhat from many local providers, for some very fundamental reasons. Internet services have become core components of business communication. Businesses can’t afford to have web site downtime, or unreliable e-mail delivery. Sufficient bandwidth is required to allow your visitors to reach your web site, and experience reasonable performance while they are there. The infrastructure required to provide high-quality, reliable Internet services is not trivial. Some core components include:

  • High-capacity bandwidth connected as closely as possible to the Internet backbone, to prevent your web site visitors from waiting too long and/or experiencing poor performance
  • Up-to-date server hardware and software, to ensure that you are able to take advantage of the latest web technologies, and your site runs smoothly
  • Power and hardware backup systems to prevent or minimize the impact of hardware failures or service interruptions
  • Backup systems to handle the inevitable hardware failure while preventing data loss and minimizing downtime
  • Secure and environmentally-controlled physical facilities, monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by qualified professionals

For these reasons, LANMARK chooses to lease appropriate facilities on behalf of our customers, rather than try to host Internet services on inadequate infrastructure. We can deliver hosting services at very affordable prices, and you can be sure that your services are hosted on World-class infrastructure.

LANMARK’s Internet service hosting consists of three components:

  • DNS Service ensures that the services hosted on your domain are reachable by anyone on the Internet. DNS is the “phone book” of the Internet; when people want to reach www.yourcompany.com, they must first look up the address via DNS.
  • Web Service provides storage space and bandwidth for your web site
  • E-mail Service provides storage space and delivery service for your e-mail accounts

DNS Service

Would you operate your business without a listing in the phone book? DNS is essentially your public listing service for your web site and e-mail.

Many providers will include DNS service as part of a web hosting package, but this approach has several drawbacks. First, DNS service may not be the core business of that hosting company, and the service itself may not be entirely reliable. If your provider’s DNS service isn’t working correctly, people won’t be able to find your web site or send you e-mail. Second, hosting your DNS service with the same provider as your web and/or e-mail service limits your flexibility. Should you decide for whatever reason to either change providers for web or e-mail, or host those services yourself, you now require the cooperation of your provider to accomplish that. At best, this will cause delays and potential problems during the transition. At worst, it may effectively prevent you from hosting you web site and e-mail in separate places.

LANMARK uses an independent DNS service provider to ensure that you always have the flexibility you need. You can host your web site, e-mail, FTP service, and any other Internet service anywhere you wish, and always be sure that you have reliable DNS service, under your control.
